1. Grade Overview
316 (UNS S31600) and 316L (UNS S31603) are premium austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steels. The key difference lies in carbon content: standard 316 features a carbon content of ≤0.08%, while 316L is an ultra-low carbon version with carbon ≤0.03%, effectively preventing welding intergranular corrosion. Both grades are alloyed with Molybdenum (Mo), making them far more corrosion-resistant than conventional 304 stainless steel.
2. Main Chemical Composition
These stainless steel grades consist of core elements including 16.00–18.50% Chromium and 10.00–14.00% Nickel, with balanced trace amounts of manganese, silicon, phosphorus and sulfur, and iron as the base element. The most critical additive is 2.00–3.00% Molybdenum (Mo), the core functional element that upgrades the performance of 316/316L series.
